Fat quarter bundle winner!

Thanks for all of the entries! Sometimes I wish that I could give a bit of fabric to all of you but with 963 of you commenting, I'd be left with no fabric! The random number generator has spoken and the winner is: Number 331!

Kristin - congrats and keep an eye out for an email from me!! Thanks for joining in everyone!

A little holiday fabric giveaway

Happy Monday! It's Sew, Mama, Sew's Giveaway Day so I thought I'd join in!

Holiday Fat Quarter Pack

How about a little fat quarter pack of festive fabrics?

Leave me a comment and I'll use the random number generator to pick a winner on the 17th. I'll happily ship internationally.

Good luck!

Placemats!

I finished up the placemats that I made for the LAMQG holiday swap. Chris got them last night and she loved them!  She had asked for something for her kitchen with blues, neutrals and a vaguely beachy vibe.

Place Mats

They are so simple and quick to sew up.  I used linen for the background fabric, Konas Teal and Coal and the light blue is a Moda Crossweave.

Corners

Corners!

The simple dense straight line quilting makes them lie nice and flat.

Quilting

I'll post a little pattern for these later this week. They would make a great Christmas gift for a friend!

In the sewing room...

I'm working on my holiday swap for the LAMQG meeting on Monday evening. We all picked names so we're making something for a specific person. It really makes for a great swap when you know the recipient...

Swap Peek

Just a peek for now! More on that soon.

And check out the blocks that I've gotten back for Bee Imaginative.

Bee Blocks

Pretty great, right? I can't wait to put this quilt together once I get all of the blocks... it's going to be a good one!

Socks!

Hope you all enjoyed your long weekends! Here, the sewing machine has been busy but nothing to show right now. Though I do have some finished craftiness...

Finished Socks!

I knit socks! Cozy pretty socks that fit really well. This was my first time knitting socks and it won't be my last.

By the way - I'm finally on twitter, follow me if you wanna!

Winner!

Thank you all for your nice comments about my quilt and the pattern being published! I have lots of plans for many patterns being available in the future but lots of leg work ahead of me before then. Anyhow - getting down to business! The random number generator picked lucky number 41! Kate C. keep an eye out for an email from me!

Happy Monday to you all!

Rectangle Blues

Have you all seen Quilt Scene?? So much great stuff in here!

Quilt Scene

I was lucky enough to have a quilt pattern published in it!

Rectangle Blues on Couch
Rectangle Blues in Mag
Rectangle Blues in Mag2

And the Modern Quilt Guild also got a nice mention!

MQG Mention

I made this quilt a while ago... so nice to finally be able to blog about it! I used a lot of Moda Crossweaves in it.  They are so beautiful!  A couple more photos...

Want a copy of the magazine?  Just leave me a comment.  I'll pick a winner on Monday!

And it's back to the sewing machine for me... Hope you all have great weekends ahead of you!

A space quilt??

Yes!  A space quilt!  A while back, the designer for Etsy's amazing space themed conference room got in touch.  Would I like to make a space quilt to be hung in the room?  Needless to say, this was a daunting task.  But I love a challenge so I took it on. How to make a quilt that is a glimpse of "space" (as in outer space - this was not a theoretical space...it had to be outer space) yet also keep my aesthetic?  It was no easy task!

Space Quilt

Think I managed ok?  Stars or spaceships?? It's up to you!  I was thinking stars (you know - like streaking by 'cause you're at warp speed, right??) but my husband though spaceships so I figured that's part of the idea - interpret it as you'd like.

White Binding

And white binding!  Not something I've otherwise done but I thought it worked well to frame the dark blues and blacks... I used a lot of Quilters Linen in this.  Thought that it was nice for add texture but not a patterned fabric.

There's more photos of the finished conference room here!

A Baby Girl Quilt!

Katie, a friend from The LAMQG is having a baby girl!  I made her this cute simple quilt.

Nice and pink but some green mixed in!

I did some fun and easy curly quilting.  I really like this simple and whimsical quilting for a baby quilt.  Keeps it nice and soft.

Some Green Detail

And a simple back - I do love those Wildwood trees!

Some Green Back

Action Kivu follow up!

It's been just over two months since the Action Kivu sewing workshop fundraiser that I held right here on my blog. I'm sure you all remember that we raised $10,510!! So impressive! We are lucky enough to be able to concretely see the fruits of our giving through some photos of the women in the workshop with their new machines that our fundraiser bought them.   Because of our fund raising they have also been able to move the workshop to a much safer location.

It's pretty great to know that together we've done some real good here!  And we'll be doing it all over again next year!

Meanwhile, please remember that Action Kivu is always taking donations. Perhaps you can set up a monthly donation? It can be small! And if you have more time than money, maybe your guild would like to raise some money with a charity quilt?   Or perhaps you'd like to throw a bake sale at your church?   Any amount helps these women who have been through so much and who are improving their lives with sewing.

Congrats to both of you and keep an eye out for my email!

The Practical Guide to Patchwork book review and giveaway!

**Comments are now closed - I will post the winners on Tuesday, Nov. 2nd!** Today it's my turn on the Practical Guide to Patchwork blog tour!

IMG_5000

I was so happy to be asked to be a part of this tour. I have been reading Elizabeth's blog since I started quilting and it has played no small role in my learning to quilt.  I'm certain that this is also the case for a lot of you reading - her tutorials and instructions have always been so well done.   I'm so happy to report that her book perfectly reflects her amazing skills!

First off, it starts with an entire section on all of the quilting basics...

IMG_5019

All the info you'd ever need to make a quilt, from start to finish - laid out in Elizabeth's clear and informative style.   This alone makes the book worthwhile but there are also 12 great patterns included.

Some simple...

IMG_5072

...and some a touch more involved.

IMG_5070

For all of the patterns Elizabeth gives alternate fabrics suggestions.  That's not something you see in most quilt books and it really encourages the reader to think about the patterns in different colors and be inspired to come up with combos of their own.

IMG_5069

People have often asked me for quilting book recommendations and I often struggle to name just one as I find some have great inspiration and some have great instructions, but often they don't have both...  Until now!  The Practical Guide to Patchwork really provides both and is overall a beautiful book.  Definitely one to add to your library!

So now on to the giveaway!   Stash Books and Elizabeth are giving away one copy of the book to a lucky winner! Just comment on this post and you'll be entered into the giveaway.

But it doesn't end there, Elizabeth is also giving away this great fat eight bundle and a second lucky commenter will win the bundle!

Finished Plaid Quilt Top

Finished up this quilt top!  Happy with the results... now I just need to figure out how I'm going to quilt it.

Plaid Quilt Top

Question:  Should this be the first pattern I sell in my etsy shop? I feel like it could be great in so many different color schemes and it really sews up quickly. Would you be interested in buying it if it was for sale?

Happy Monday to all of you!

Inspiration check in...

Did you all see that it's the halfway point on Project Modern's first challenge? How are you all coming along?? There's so much inspiration to be found everywhere...

A while ago I spotted this photo over on Cathy of California's blog...

6a00d8341c4eba53ef013486253baa970c-800wi

It's a contemporary woven wall hanging by Eve Gulick.

I've asked my Bee Imaginative members to make me blocks inspired by this weaving and I know I'm going to be thrilled by the results... I sent off the fabric...

And the blocks are starting to be made!

Check out what Rita made me:

Bee Imaginative - Swap block for Alissa

And I made my block already...

IMG_3189

This quilt, is going to be so great. What's inspiring you these days? Why not make a quilt about it and enter it into Project Modern??

A wedding gift

Next Up

The next quilt I'll be working on which is a wedding gift for an old dear friend and his new husband. I've started up a day job again for a few weeks (anyone know any antique experts who wanna be on TV?) so the quilting is slow going these days but I'm excited to dive into this one. Lavender isn't my usual go to color, but it was requested and I always love the challenge of working within someone's requests. As long as I get to be "me" within them of course!

Hope you all have great weekends ahead of you!

Then and now!

That was then...

The Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild

...and this is now!

LA MQG 1 Year Anniversary!

The LA Modern Quilt Guild's first meeting and our 1st anniversary meeting!  We are going strong.  This past meeting was such a ball and there was just such a sense of community, excitement and fun in the air.  Always takes me forever to fall asleep after meetings this great - they are just so inspiring and energizing!

That great swap I mentioned in my last post?  Check out what I got from Leah!

Horace

The cutest freakin' owl ever!!  I love him and have named him Horace.
